Inspection of a truck transporting spent-laying hens to slaughter

On the night from June 9th to June 10th, a team from Eyes on Animals was on the roads in the Netherlands to check on the welfare of animals bring transported to slaughterhouses in the dark hours. Checking on turkeys being transported

Late at night we trailed a poultry truck heading east. By the time it got to Meppel it finally stopped at a gas station and we were able to take a closer look and speak to the driver. The transport company was Mantrans and the driver was very polite and open to us. He informed us that there were turkeys on board, destined for a slaughterhouse near Bremen in Germany. After receiving information that a cattle truck had been blocked for several days at the Bulgarian/Turkish border, we joined forces with Tierschutzbund Zurich and sent a team to the border for 4 days to see how grave the problems were there for the animals forced to wait. In 2009 and 2010, Eyes on Animals sent numerous reports of their observations in the field of cattle trucks where the cattle did not have adequate headroom. Ook op warme dagen worden varkens dicht op elkaar gepropt in bloedhete vrachtwagens. Hijgend en trillend komen ze aan bij het slachthuis. Als ze onderweg niet al bezwijken aan de hitte.

Al dit leed voor een stukje vlees 😔
