Trailing of sheep trucks from UK to Netherlands by boat

November 19, 2011

Early this morning, Eyes on Animals and the French organization, Protection Mondiale des Animaux de Ferme, trailed two livestock trucks coming off the Joline boat at Calais. The Joline boat is an old boat previously used as a tanker and now owned by the Dutch animal trader and transport company "Onderwater". He bought it so that animals could be again exported from the UK … [Read more...] about Trailing of sheep trucks from UK to Netherlands by boat

A local freelancer from Eyes on Animals and the Animal Welfare Foundation inspected today a sheep truck from the Bulgarian transport company "Denis". The animals were very overcrowded and yet the truck was still accepted by the EU authorities at this border crossing from Europe (Bulgaria) into Turkey. As a result of the stressful conditions inside, several sheep died. Our … [Read more...] about Inspection of sheep truck at Bulgarian/Turkish border

Day 5 – Inspection at the Bulgarian/Turkish border

October 21, 2011

Today we checked on several Dutch platted trucks from the company Keus en Mollink. We are relieved to see that this time, finally, the condition of the animals and the trucks appear alright. The drivers all know about us being there. They stop at a station in Kapikue to give the animals water and hay. We observe a very dirty Hungarian truck from the company Agrarcoop. The … [Read more...] about Day 5 – Inspection at the Bulgarian/Turkish border

Day 4 – Inspection of EU animal trucks and lobby work at the Bulgarian/Turkish border

October 20, 2011

Today the teams are very busy checking on the many trucks coming from all over Europe into Turkey. We are shocked to find trucks with very young calves on board, and bulls from Estonia! The calves are crying out; such young animals still dependant on milk for nutrition are too fragile to be transported such long distances and over a border where, if blocked, there is no … [Read more...] about Day 4 – Inspection of EU animal trucks and lobby work at the Bulgarian/Turkish border

October 19, 2011

Turkey_19_10_11

Today one team holds a meeting with the Director of the Department of Agriculture in Edirne. The two officials from yesterday are also at the meeting. It is a productive discussion about the urgent need for a stable at the border. We also make it clear that suffering animals must be treated or euthanized, not simply left to slowly die on the trucks. They insist that … [Read more...] about Day 3 – Inspections of EU animal trucks and lobby work at the Bulgarian/Turkey border

This time we did not observe any animals with their wings or legs crushed by the crate doors. Nevertheless we remain very concerned about the crates that were used for the … [Read more...] about Inspection of poultry trucks in NL

Day 2 – Inspections of EU animal trucks and lobby work at Bulgarian/Turkey border

October 18, 2011

The drivers of the 2 sheep trucks blocked now since 4 days take the right decision to emergency slaughter several of the dying sheep on board, to finally end their suffering. There is still no word if they will be allowed to leave soon, and thus the sheep are still stuck on the truck which is now smelling very strongly of ammonia. Many sheep have snot dripping from their … [Read more...] about Day 2 – Inspections of EU animal trucks and lobby work at Bulgarian/Turkey border

Flames billow from a hog barn near Simcoe, Ont., Tuesday as firefighters battle a blaze that left at least 20,000 hogs dead.
