Inspection of a Dutch cattle lorry whereby soms cattle didn’t have enough headspace

June 11, 2010

headspace

An Eyes on Animals team inspected a double-deck lorry from the Dutch company Erik Tax (from Veewaardigvervoer!) parked at a gas station on the A50. Inside were Holstein cows with Dutch ear tage. Several had their backs touching the ceiling above. These animals were not given enough head room, leading to limited ventilation and discomfort from not being able to stand … [Read more...] about Inspection of a Dutch cattle lorry whereby soms cattle didn’t have enough headspace

Meeting with English scientists & Dutch transport company on welfare

January 29, 2010

Eyes on Animals was invited to London to participate in a small discussion group made out of scientists conducting research in animal transport and a transport company that makes its trucks available for the welfare research to be conducted. The purpose of the meeting was to tackle the theme of animal-welfare-during transport: what concerns there still were, what parts of … [Read more...] about Meeting with English scientists & Dutch transport company on welfare

Inspection of a chicken truck in Belgium

January 27, 2010

Eyes on Animals inspectors trailed for a short while a truck transporting crates full of small animals. Finally when it stopped at a gas station we were able to look under the wind protectors to check on the animals on board. They were broiler chickens going to slaughter, only a couple of months old and still peeping. Fortunately the loading density was acceptable and the … [Read more...] about Inspection of a chicken truck in Belgium

Inspection of a rabbit livestock truck during very cold temperatures

January 26, 2010

rabbit_truck

Eyes on Animals inspectors checked on a livestock truck transporting rabbits to slaughter. During the winter, and particularly tonight, there are very strong cold winds and thus the trucks transporting these small animals must have lateral wind-protectors. One truck however only had partial side protectors, and thus a few columns of stacked transport crates were exposed … [Read more...] about Inspection of a rabbit livestock truck during very cold temperatures

Meeting with Dutch transport company with bad reputation about improving its act

October 16, 2009

Today Eyes on Animals met with a Dutch animal transport company that has a bad reputation. Many complaints have come in from official veterinarian inspectors in Poland, Denmark, Italy and the Netherlands, as well as from Eyes on Animals, concerning his livestock transports. In the past the water system has been broken, the 24 resting intervals were not respected, dead … [Read more...] about Meeting with Dutch transport company with bad reputation about improving its act

Inspection of livestock trucks together with Canadian TV in Italy

October 10, 2009

canadian_tv

The Canadian TV team that documented our TASKFORCE meeting and tours also wanted to show the difference between livestock transport legislation in Europe from the much outdated rules in Canada. Eyes on Animals saw this as a great opportunity to put more pressure on the Canadian government that still accepts, for example, that cattle be transported 52 hours without water, … [Read more...] about Inspection of livestock trucks together with Canadian TV in Italy

July 31, 2009

T-Spanish_sheep_truck_with_Perpignan_gendarmes-31.07.2009_047

In the early hours of July 31 (2009), Eyes on Animals together with PMAF stopped two Spanish-platted trucks with sheep on board, destined for slaughter in Lebanon.  The sheep did not have enough head room to stand up in their natural position, and there were no dividers in place.  The French gendarmes handed out two fines because of this.  The … [Read more...] about Inspection and fining of a Spanish truck with sheep destined for slaughter in Lebanon

kalveren_transport

Eyes on Animals, together with an investigator from Protection Mondiale des Animaux de Ferme, were busy inspecting trucks at the French/Spanish border. A livestock truck with Romanian calves was stopped. We noticed that the noses of the 3 month old calves on board were extremely dry. The gendarmes were present and ordered the chauffeur to turn on his water system. Belgian cattle loaded on double-deck Dutch lorry from company Busser Bennekom without enough head room

July 15, 2009

busser_bennekom_2009

Eyes on Animals spotted a Dutch lorry from the company Busser Benekom. On board were tall Holstein cattle loaded at a cattle market in Belgium (in Brugge). For many of them, they only had 2-4cm of space above their backs! They could not hold their head in a natural position. On top of this, cattle with horns were loaded together with cattle without horns, potentially … [Read more...] about Belgian cattle loaded on double-deck Dutch lorry from company Busser Bennekom without enough head room
