Positive steps forward in Ghana! Last year Eyes on Animals team joined WACPAW to inspect the Tamale cattle market in Ghana. Because there was no proper loading ramp, cattle were dragged, pushed and hoisted up onto the lorries. Today we gave a training in humane handling to pig butchers in the region of Tamale. It was held at the UDS campus abattoir. Today we visited Jolmers Opleidingen. Jolmers is one of two institutes in the Netherlands that provides the new and compulsory course for chicken catchers. Total ban on exhibiting horses with docked tails at Dutch fairs
Our lobby has been successful; there is finally a TOTAL ban on exhibiting horses with docked tails. This was just announced by the Dutch Minister of Agriculture, Mrs. Schouten. Sinds it became illegal to show horses with docked tails in 2001, many traditional draft horse breeders used a loophole in the law and had the tails amputated by corrupt veterinarians.
