Meeting with DEFRA (Departement for Environment, Food & Rural Affairs

October 19, 2018

Eyes on Animals at DEFRAAfter Eyes on Animals were invited to submit evidence to the UK Government’s consultation on a possible ban on live exports from the UK, we were duly invited to attend a meeting at DEFRA’s head office in London, along with WAP (World Animal Protection) and CIWF UK to discuss options available to the UK regarding the trade in live exports once they exit the EU.

The meeting was held by FAWC (Farm Animal Welfare Committee) a body formed by DEFRA whose members include both those from a farming and veterinary background to specifically advise on issues surrounding farm animal welfare. FAWC are consulting with all stakeholders in the industry, along with NGO’s to provide an opinion on whether the UK should ban or place restrictions on the trade. We await to hear their decision.

“We want to see calves flying out of this country,” the president of the Irish Farmers’ Association, Tim Cullinan. I want to see calves looked after on the farm they were born on, until they are weaned. So disappointing to see this nonsense again...
