Visit poultry slaughterhouse Remkes in Epe (NL)

October 31, 2017

Eyes on Animals team at Remkes

This morning a team from Eyes on Animals visited Remkes poultry slaughterhouse in Epe (NL). Remkes mainly slaughters breeder broilers. The birds are rendered unconscious with the Anglia Autoflow CO2 gas stunning system. In this system birds are stunned while they are still inside their transport crates. Therefore many stressful procedures, like manual or automatic … [Read more...] about Visit poultry slaughterhouse Remkes in Epe (NL)

Meeting with Tamale slaughterhouse Assembly Members

Update from our project in Ghana: our colleagues from WACPAW met with the Assembly members in charge of Tamale slaughterhouse to discuss in detail our suggestions on how they can reduce the stress and suffering of animals. WACPAW left the meeting feeling positive that the slaughterhouse will adopt several major changes and possibly also start stunning the animals prior to … [Read more...] about Meeting with Tamale slaughterhouse Assembly Members, Ghana

Visit of Vitelco calf slaughterhouse (NL)

October 13, 2017

Moving to the restraint box

On the 13th of October we visited Vitelco Calf slaughterhouse in Den Bosch. Vitelco slaughters 350,000 rosé and white meat calves each year. The unloading went smoothly because, from the truck, the calves could immediately walk into the lairage. There were no sharp turns or dead corners that could cause confusion. To move the calves to the stunner, use was made of the … [Read more...] about Visit of Vitelco calf slaughterhouse (NL)

Visit slaughterhouse in Tamale, Ghana

October 6, 2017

Slaughterhouse in Tamale

On the 6th of October we visited a slaughterhouse in Tamale, Ghana together with the local NGO WACPAW. The handling was extremely brutal. Animals were hit, tails were broken on purpose and necks were stretched backwards so the animals were forced to fall down. Also the design of the slaughterhouse was a catastrophe. Animals were killed all together in one big room. … [Read more...] about Visit slaughterhouse in Tamale, Ghana

Visit of calf slaughterhouse Fuite Veal

May 10, 2017

Calf slaughterhouse in Tubbergen

Today we visited Vuite Feal, a calf slaughterhouse in Tubbergen (NL). Fuite Veal is a relatively new slaughterhouse. We were allowed to observe the entire slaughterhouse: The unloading of trucks, the lairage, the raceway and the stunning area. The handling of the calves went smoothly and without too much distress, but we did have some recommendations to improve the … [Read more...] about Visit of calf slaughterhouse Fuite Veal

Re-visit slaughterhouse Heinen

May 5, 2017

Raceway with dead-end

Today we again visited the slaughterhouse Heinen, which in 2016 took our advice and improved their restraint box. The restraint box was previously closed in the front but has now been "opened" so the pigs find it less scary to walk to the restrainer. Moreover, if pigs are less stressed, they move more easily, which also causes less stress for employees. This again has a … [Read more...] about Re-visit slaughterhouse Heinen

Unannounced visits to slaughterhouses East Netherlands

May 2, 2017

On May 2, 2017 we visited five slaughterhouses: Gosschalk in Epe, Poultry slaughterhouses Remkes in Epe, Jan van 'Ee in Stroe, Van Bor in Nijkerkerveen and the duck slaughterhouse Tomassen Duck in Ermelo. It involved unannounced visits, which made us run the risk that there was no time for us, and the chance that we would not be welcome. We were willing to take this risk … [Read more...] about Unannounced visits to slaughterhouses East Netherlands

Unannounced visits to slaughterhouses East Netherlands

May 1, 2017

Visit of a slaughterhouse

On May 1, 2017, we visited three slaughterhouses unannounced: poultry slaughterhouse ESBRO in Wehl, Heinz's pork and beef slaughterhouse in Zelhem and calf slaughterhouse Fuite Veal in Tubbergen. At poultry slaughterhouse ESBRO, there was initially no time and interest in our visit. After talking briefly with the company leader and indicating what our goal was (giving … [Read more...] about Unannounced visits to slaughterhouses East Netherlands

Visit to new slaughterhouse Westfort

December 20, 2016

Lairage

On December 20, 2016, we visited the new pig slaughterhouse Westfort in IJsselstein. Several of our recommendations to reduce animal suffering have been actioned. For example: the lairage is very large so pigs brought to the slaughterhouse can be unloaded immediately and do not have to wait outside in the truck, which is especially good when the weather conditions are very … [Read more...] about Visit to new slaughterhouse Westfort

EGO Pig Slaughterhouse in Germany gets started with advice EonA

December 15, 2016

Today, a team from Eyes on Animals visited a pig slaughterhouse near Osnabrück (Germany). Because the slaughterhouse is about to be renovated, our suggestions on how animal welfare could be improved can be directly included in the renovation plans.  Also involved in this renovation is the German Friedrich Loeffler Institute, including the expert Dr. Marahrens, who was also … [Read more...] about EGO Pig Slaughterhouse in Germany gets started with advice EonA

Las primeras víctimas siempre son los animales.

Se debería de aprobar un pacto de estado contra el fuego, por la prevención y de compromisos contra el cambio climático.
