WILKI sends overview of the adjustments for better animal welfare

April 14, 2020

For some time now, Eyes on Animals has been working with poultry slaughterhouse Wilki: first to improve their crates, which initially had small doorways which sometimes broke, resulting in many injured birds. WILKI replaced them all with new and improved crates. Secondly, they agreed to work on implementing some of our ideas to reduce stress during … [Read more...] about WILKI sends overview of the adjustments for better animal welfare

Eyes on Animals consulted with pig slaughterhouse Westfort after undercover images

March 9, 2020

Today, after an intensive inspection of their entire slaughter process, we discussed a number of points that we believe could be improved on. These points include: reducing the noise in the slaughterhouse to which pigs are very sensitive, improvements with regard to moving the animals forward, loading density in the waiting pens, stunning and euthanizing of the … [Read more...] about Eyes on Animals consulted with pig slaughterhouse Westfort after undercover images

Further renovations at Kumasi pig abattoir, Ghana

January 3, 2020

Thanks to a generous donation from Varkens in Nood towards our on-going efforts to improve a very problematic pig slaughterhouse in Kumasi (Ghana), WACPAW (West Africa Center for the Protection of Animal Welfare) and Eyes on Animals were able to return last week to Kumasi to continue works on the infrastructure that we started in late October.  The sides of the new … [Read more...] about Further renovations at Kumasi pig abattoir, Ghana

Another cattle slaughterhouse in Turkey switches over to stunning

December 17, 2019

Excellent breaking news from our team in Turkey: another cattle slaughterhouse here accepts stunning. Today we trained the butchers at a plant in western Turkey on how to use a captive bolt pistol and explained how it works on rendering cattle unconscious so that they at least feel less pain and fear during slaughter. They saw the benefit immediately to welfare … [Read more...] about Another cattle slaughterhouse in Turkey switches over to stunning

Compaxo slaughterhouse takes measurements to reduce heatstress

October 22, 2019

Immediately after a visit from  Eyes on Animals during the summer heatwave, Compaxo rented, and then  purchased several fans to reduce heatstress in pigs held on stationary trucks waiting for slaughter. The fans were placed next to those trucks waiting in the lairage and in the vicinity of the slaughterhouse. We advised Compaxo to elevate some of the fans in order for the … [Read more...] about Compaxo slaughterhouse takes measurements to reduce heatstress

Practical training course on humane slaughter at Cape Coast University slaughterhouse, Ghana

October 14, 2019

Eyes on Animals and WACPAW were busy this afternoon teaching butchers and agricultural students at Cape Coast university slaughterhouse how to maintain and clean the captive bolts which we gave them last year. Since last years’ training, all animals at the university abattoir are stunned first. We also assisted them in developing humane restraint techniques for rabbits … [Read more...] about Practical training course on humane slaughter at Cape Coast University slaughterhouse, Ghana

Follow-up check of Cape Coast cattle slaughterhouse, Ghana

October 14, 2019

Today we did a follow-up inspection of the Cape Coast cattle slaughterhouse, where we gave a training last year and distributed captive bolt pistols and cartridges, so they could render cattle unconscious before cutting their throats. Employees let us know that they are too afraid to stun all of the cattle because some of the cattle can be very wild or aggressive. We … [Read more...] about Follow-up check of Cape Coast cattle slaughterhouse, Ghana

Eyes on Animals off to Ghana, thank you to KLM

October 12, 2019

Our team is off to Ghana today to join the local group WACPAW to again help inspect and improve slaughter conditions there. We are bringing lots of equipment with us that is not available in Ghana, in order to help reduce pain during suffering (knife sharpeners, proper knives, stunners…). This excessive baggage normally would have cost us 100 euro but KLM, after hearing … [Read more...] about Eyes on Animals off to Ghana, thank you to KLM

Follow-up inspection of Turkish slaughterhouses by Eyes on Animals

October 2, 2019

Animals often arrive severely injured at the Turkish slaughter houses, unable to stand or walk and suffering horribly. Yet they are forced to walk to the area where they’ll be slaughtered. Using a chain, they are then hoisted in the air by one leg only to have their throats slit without being stunned first and while still fully conscious. Eyes on Animals does its … [Read more...] about Follow-up inspection of Turkish slaughterhouses by Eyes on Animals

Slaughterhouse in Tamale (Ghana) closes drains to prevent cattle from falling in and breaking their legs

August 20, 2019

During our visits to a slaughterhouse in Tamale (Ghana) we witnessed how cattle were falling  into uncovered drains, causing extreme suffering, including, cattle breaking their legs and not being able to get back up again. Cattle where than violently dragged to the kill floor by being pulled  and dragged  by their tails, ears and (broken) limbs. On our recommendation … [Read more...] about Slaughterhouse in Tamale (Ghana) closes drains to prevent cattle from falling in and breaking their legs

Our most recent newsletter

Dear friends,

After years of our fieldwork and our enforcement requests, the NVWA (the Dutch government inspection authority) is finally taking action.

The NVWA has made it clear to the entire calf export-import industry between Ireland and the Netherlands: transporting unweaned calves for more than 30 hours without milk will no longer be tolerated.
