Eyes on Animals consulted with pig slaughterhouse Westfort after undercover images

March 9, 2020

Today, after an intensive inspection of their entire slaughter process, we discussed a number of points that we believe could be improved on.
These points include: reducing the noise in the slaughterhouse to which pigs are very sensitive, improvements with regard to moving the animals forward, loading density in the waiting pens, stunning and euthanizing of the pigs.

Westfort’s stance was cooperative and we are therefore counting on our recommendations being implemented.

In addition to EonA advising slaughterhouses on how to reduce animal suffering, it is also very important that people from within the sector speak out on the matter. We also believe that slaughterhouse staff should address each other when (avoidable) animal suffering is witnessed.

It goes without saying that we will return to Westfort after some time to check the improvements made.
