Eyes on Animals visits the slaughterhouse of KemperKip in Uden

July 24, 2019

On Wednesday 24 July a team from Eyes on Animals made an unannounced visit to the slaughterhouse of KemperKip in Uden. We wanted to see if measures were being taken to protect chickens waiting for slaughter during the extreme heat of this week.  No slaughtering was taking place on the day but we had the opportunity to have a conversation with an … [Read more...] about Eyes on Animals visits the slaughterhouse of KemperKip in Uden

Discussions with Islam theologians in Turkey about the question of pre-stunning animals during slaughter

June 12, 2019

Asalet Sancakdaroğlu is a freelance expert for Eyes on Animals and AWF and has been visiting slaughterhouses throughout Turkey since 2011. Today he interviewed two Islamic theologians (Dr. Prof. Hayri Kırbaşoğlu and Dr. Prof. Ilhami Güler) about whether animals could be rendered unconscious before slaughter and still be considered Halal meat.  Both … [Read more...] about Discussions with Islam theologians in Turkey about the question of pre-stunning animals during slaughter

Unannounced visit of Dokkum mobile slaughter unit

May 29, 2019

Today an EonA team was in Friesland and decided to check on the new mobile slaughter units run by the owner of Dokkum cattle slaughterhouse.  Three days a week, 4 of his “ mobile slaughter trucks” travel to farms in the 3 northern provinces, to slaughter cows that are no longer fit for transport, but still good for consumption. His mobile slaughter units are also used … [Read more...] about Unannounced visit of Dokkum mobile slaughter unit

Yalova slaughterhouse in Turkey is causing great suffering!

February 22, 2019

At Yalova slaughterhouse

Shame on slaughterhouse Yalova, the slaughterhouse where last week we filmed them hoisting a downer bull fully up to the ceiling by his horns (!) as seen in our youtube video: https://youtube.be/37KO-tCyY8w We were there last week to examine what changes were needed to their restraint box, before returning today to install a pneumatic stunner above the restraint box … [Read more...] about Yalova slaughterhouse in Turkey is causing great suffering!

Corlu slaughterhouse in Turkey most progressive

February 21, 2019

Restraint box

The manager and veterinarian from Corlu slaughterhouse in Turkey are so far the most motivated, open-minded and effective people to improve animal-welfare that we have worked with in Turkey. Not only are they the first to restrain cattle upright instead of hoisting them alive by a leg and to start stunning the cattle before slaughter to at least render them first … [Read more...] about Corlu slaughterhouse in Turkey most progressive

Vion cattle slaughterhouse, Leeuwarden, NL

January 25, 2019

Restraint box

Today we visited the new cattle slaughterhouse in Leeuwarden from the company Vion. The plant had received consultation before building it on animal-behaviour and the latest design tips and equipment available to lairage, herd, restrain and slaughter cattle. Visit of Pali pig slaughterhouse, Geldrop (NL)

December 11, 2018

Unloading

Today we inspected Pali pig slaughterhouse. We were here during the heat wave last summer to see if there was a long line-up or not. We were pleased to see that pigs did not have to wait long before being unloaded, mostly because Pali runs their own logistics and trucks, and thus can coordinate arrival times easily. Today we were asked to come back to check on the entire … [Read more...] about Visit of Pali pig slaughterhouse, Geldrop (NL)

Chicken transport

Today Eyes on Animals visited poultry slaughterhouse GPS in Nunspeet. Various animal welfare measures had been implemented. There was blue light in the lairage. It is known that this has a calming effect on the chickens. The lairage can be cooled by means of fans with a misting system.  Outside the abattoir there is a woody area where trucks can be in the shade … [Read more...] about Visit to poultry slaughterhouse GPS in Nunspeet

Animal welfare improvements at Tomassen duck slaughterhouse

November 6, 2018

Ducks

After Eyes on Animals visited Tomassen duck slaughterhouse, they have made some in-house changes to reduce suffering.  Tomassen uses an electric waterbath to stun the ducks before slaughter. Before stunning ducks are shackled alive manually. On our recommendation Tomassen closed a gap underneath the shackle-line where the ducks sometimes got stuck with their beaks. The … [Read more...] about Animal welfare improvements at Tomassen duck slaughterhouse

🐄 Koe met kalf aan de voet produceert niet automatisch minder melk.

Onderzoek laat zien dat de totale melkproductie vergelijkbaar kan zijn. Het verschil zit vooral in de melk die het kalf zelf opneemt. 👇
