Visit to pig slaughterhouse Van Rooi for animal welfare advice

June 1, 2023

Today we visited Van Rooi pig slaughterhouse in Helmond. After a tour of the slaughterhouse we came together to brainstorm on how we could reduce stress during loading, unloading and whilst moving the pigs through the raceways. No more mixing Van Rooi is currently experimenting keeping the pigs in small social groups. Previously, there would be about 30 pigs in one … [Read more...] about Visit to pig slaughterhouse Van Rooi for animal welfare advice

Explaining how stunners work to more cattle slaughterhouses in Turkey

May 31, 2023

Today we spent another day visiting numerous Turkish cattle abattoirs to introduce the captive bolt stunner and educate on how animal suffering can at least be reduced when they are rendered first unconscious. More and more Halal consumers in Turkey are de-bunking the myth that Halal means slaughter with just a knife, and realizing Halal means "food safe to eat" and … [Read more...] about Explaining how stunners work to more cattle slaughterhouses in Turkey

Teaching stunning at cattle abattoir near Bursa, Turkey

May 30, 2023

Yesterday Eyes on Animals worked at a slaughterhouse near Bursa (Turkey) to show the difference between traditional slaughter (without pre-stunning) and more humane slaughter (with a stunner). They were slaughtering cattle from the Czech Republic. We showed them how the use of a stunner renders the cattle at least unconscious before they are hoisted by a  chain around … [Read more...] about Teaching stunning at cattle abattoir near Bursa, Turkey

Spreading awareness in slaughterhouses in Bursa, Turkey

May 29, 2023

The Eyes on Animals team in Turkey spent the whole day today visiting slaughterhouses in Bursa. We explained to the managers what a captive bolt stunner is and how it works to render animals unconscious (and thus insensitive) before slaughter. They are in favour of stunning, but none dare to be the first to start stunning the animals as stunning is still, wrongly, seen as … [Read more...] about Spreading awareness in slaughterhouses in Bursa, Turkey

Spreading better practices to French pig abattoirs

May 23, 2023

Today we were visited by 4 French managers of a large pork company which has 3 slaughterhouses in France, one of which uses electric stunning. They visited us in order to see the improvements we made at a large Dutch pig abattoir and see if they could put some of the better practices in place in their own abattoirs. We started with a short introduction, presented a film … [Read more...] about Spreading better practices to French pig abattoirs

Another step forward at Tamale abattoir, Ghana

May 10, 2023

WACPAW and EonA have been busy trying to reduce some of the horrific suffering at the slaughterhouse in Tamale, Ghana. Here cattle too weak or injured to walk are dragged into the slaughterhouse by a rope tied around their neck. Broken pelvis, broken leg... it does not matter. We have built trolleys and the board of the abattoir is willing to use them - soon downer animals … [Read more...] about Another step forward at Tamale abattoir, Ghana

Se debería de aprobar un pacto de estado contra el fuego, por la prevención y de compromisos contra el cambio climático.
