On the advice of Eyes on Animals, misting systems have been installed on one side of the canopy covered waiting area for the waiting pig trucks at VION in Boxtel. Large fans now blow mist over and through the trucks. The misting system, in combination with large fans to prevent excessive humidity, makes it much more comfortable for the pigs under the canopy. It is approximately 3-8 degrees cooler under the canopy compared to outside. The pigs visibly enjoy the cooling and stretch their noses as far as possible out of the truck.
We are pleased with this measure, as it makes a difference for tens of thousands of animals every day. Nevertheless, we still consider it irresponsible to transport pigs at temperatures above 25 degrees, and crucial to unload trucks as quickly as possible (<15 minutes). We also suggested VION in Boxtel to further improve their canopy.
