Chicken transport crates with the cruel flap-door now banned

November 1, 2016

Crushed wing

For a long time crates with small flap doors were used to transport hens to slaughter. During our inspections of chickens being caught and loaded at the farm for transport to slaughter, we observed that these flap doors caused a lot of horrible injuries. Wings, heads and feet were often crushed. Recently the Dutch authorities made the decision to forbid these crates … [Read more...] about Chicken transport crates with the cruel flap-door now banned

Baskent slaughterhouse Sincan, Turkey

October 29, 2016

Today we visited Baskent slaughterhouse near Ankara. We had been to this slaughterhouse several times before, to propose improvements. They had added solid side panels to part of their raceway to ease animal handling. Today we returned to inquire about the possibility of them testing out the next upright restraint box of Helmaks. Baskent continues to use the horrible … [Read more...] about Baskent slaughterhouse Sincan, Turkey

Animal Welfare Course for catchers

Last Thursday (October 27th 2016) Eyes on Animals - with support of the Dierenbescherming - presented an animal welfare course to 24 bird catchers of Van den Broek. Van den Broek is one of the largest poultry companies in the Netherlands and we encounter them regularly during our inspections. Van den Broek responded positively to our request to attend a course and as many … [Read more...] about Animal Welfare Course for 24 catchers of Van den Broek

Visit of Helmaks slaughter-equipment manufacturer, Turkey

October 27, 2016

First upright restraint box in Turkey

More significant improvements are made for the animals in Turkey: for the first time an upright restraint box (to restrain animals during slaughter) is being built in Turkey. This new box is to replace the current horrible trip-floor restraint boxes commonly used in Turkey and many other Islamic countries, which forces cows and bulls to fall down to have a leg chained and … [Read more...] about Visit of Helmaks slaughter-equipment manufacturer, Turkey

Corlu Municipal slaughterhouse in Turkey

October 26, 2016

Stunner in use

Eyes on Animals and TSB|AWF visited this slaughterhouse and saw  a large bovine calmly moved into a restraint box, kept upright on all fours (instead of being forced to fall and then hoisted alive) and be stunned correctly. The bovine fell down unconscious, and was then hoisted and bled out, without any reaction of the animal … [Read more...] about Corlu Municipal slaughterhouse in Turkey

Corlu Municipal slaughterhouse in Turkey now equiped with a stunner

October 26, 2016

Stunner at Corlu Municipal slaughterhouse

The Turkish scientific and veterinarian community, as well as more and more Religious authorities, are understanding the advantages to animal-welfare and meat quality when animals are first correctly stunned during slaughter. With correct stunning, the animal is immediately rendered unconscious and insensitive to pain and thus, when the throat is cut open to drain the … [Read more...] about Corlu Municipal slaughterhouse in Turkey now equiped with a stunner

Several animal welfare improvements in the slaughterhouse of Thönes Natur

October 24, 2016

On our advice Thönes Natur has made several improvements to their slaughterhouse reducing the amount of suffering caused to the animals. Thönes Natur uses an electric waterbath to stun chickens and turkeys. Before the birds are stunned, they have to be hung upside down alive in shackles. Then they are brought - upside down - to the electric water bath to be stunned. This … [Read more...] about Several animal welfare improvements in the slaughterhouse of Thönes Natur

Wilki replaces old broken poultry-crates with better ones

October 14, 2016

A few years ago, Eyes on Animals observed how the Belgian transport and slaughter company “Wilki” regularly picked up “ spent” laying hens on farms in the Netherlands. We were very disappointed by the condition and quality of the crates they were using. Many of the crates were broken, and thus were at risk of collapsing (crushing the birds inside) under the weight of the … [Read more...] about Wilki replaces old broken poultry-crates with better ones

Las primeras víctimas siempre son los animales.

Se debería de aprobar un pacto de estado contra el fuego, por la prevención y de compromisos contra el cambio climático.
