Today seven animal transports with breeding cattle from Austria and the Czech Republic pass the Turkish border at Kapikule. Our AWF/EonA team documents the transport conditions and the waiting times at the border. In five of the vehicles there is enough bedding although it is mostly quite dirty. Many pregnant heifers have lied down and are resting. In the two trucks of the … [Read more...] about Inspection border Kapikule, Turkey

An AWF/EonA team drives to the Turkish-Bulgarian border at Kapikule to check on animal transports shipping bovines from EU member states to Turkey. October 12, 2014

12.10.2014_TR_stuck_Italian_buffalo (4)

Again drama at the Bulgarian/Turkish border. This time it concerns 28 pregnant buffalos from northern Italy. They are being blocked inside the border because of a mistake in the paper-work. The buffalos arrived to the border last Wednesday morning (08.10.2014), after a trip of almost 2000 kilometres. The Bulgarian inspection post let them through but the Turkish have not. … [Read more...] about Drama at the EU/Turkey border

Inspection of livestock truck from Sleegers company on Hungarian highway

May 22, 2014

Compliments to the Dutch transport company "Sleegers". The EonA/AWF team in Hungary partly trailed and had stopped one of his trucks today on the highway near Szeged. On board were breeding boars and gilts from northern France. Conditions were according to the legislation; the boars were separated from eachother to avoid fighting, the gilts had plenty of space, and … [Read more...] about Inspection of livestock truck from Sleegers company on Hungarian highway

Unsuccessful follow-up inspection of Agrarcoop, Hungary

May 20, 2014

Today the EonA/AWF team attempted to do a follow-up check on the farm owned by Agrarcoop in Hungary. Agrarcoop is a large Hungarian company that fattens calves and exports cattle of all ages to slaughter and for further production, including to Turkey. In 2012 we visited their farm/export station and noted some positive and negative observations. Of big concern were … [Read more...] about Unsuccessful follow-up inspection of Agrarcoop, Hungary

Inspection Dutch spent-hens loaded onto truck destined for slaughter in Poland 2

A team from EonA and AWF checked on the loading of spent-hens at a farm in south Netherlands. The birds were destined for a slaughterhouse in Poland. The hens had been housed in so-called “enriched” cages their whole life and were grabbed by their legs and suspended upside down by chicken-catchers. Once the chicken-catchers had three suspended birds in each hand they would … [Read more...] about Inspection Dutch spent-hens loaded onto truck destined for slaughter in Poland

Inspection of Hunland truck with German piglets for Romania

April 1, 2014

EonA team in Germany checked on German piglets heading to Romania by the Hungarian company Hunland (that we gave a welfare-workshop to 30 of its drivers last year). The piglets had just been loaded and were heading on a long 20 hour journey to a farm in Romania to be fattened. Fortunately, the drivers were cooperative and stopped to let us check on the loading conditions … [Read more...] about Inspection of Hunland truck with German piglets for Romania

The cruel reality behind horse meat in The Netherlands

March 23, 2014

Most horses that are killed for the meat that is sold in Dutch supermarkets and snackbars have suffered under extremely cruel conditions. This becomes clear from a large international investigation conducted by Eyes on Animals together with Tierschutzbund Zürich (Switserland) and Animals’ Angels USA.   The Netherlands imports meat from almost 60.000 horses yearly … [Read more...] about The cruel reality behind horse meat in The Netherlands

Today the team from Eyes on Animals brought a work visit to a large poultry farm, containing 175.000 broiler chickens spread over 7 barns. The broiler chickens that are ready for transport to the slaughterhouse are mechanically caught at this farm by a machine. The machine has a conveyer belt system, which makes sure that the chickens are in an upright position when placed … [Read more...] about Loading of broilers by machine

Inspecting chicken crates of GPS transport company, NL

January 20, 2014

screenshot.494

The team from EonA noticed from the highway that chickens were being loaded at a chicken-farm in the surroundings of St. Oedenrode. Usually this happens at night. We took a small detour to pay this this farm a visit. We weren’t allowed to look inside the farm to watch how the chicken-catchers caught and loaded the birds but we were granted permission to inspect the … [Read more...] about Inspecting chicken crates of GPS transport company, NL
