Inspection of Tekirdag slaughterhouse, Turkey

December 18, 2017

Upright cattle restraint box

The team from Eyes on Animals and Animal Welfare Foundation were at Tekirdag slaughterhouse in Turkey today. This slaughterhouse made a very important improvement - it stopped live hoisting the cattle. It has replaced the horrible trip-floor box (watch this video to understand why this restraint box commonly used in Turkey is so bad : https://youtu.be/On-qkoXeKwc) with a … [Read more...] about Inspection of Tekirdag slaughterhouse, Turkey

Remkes poultry slaughterhouse (NL) makes changes to decrease animal stress

November 14, 2017

Trucks at Remkes

After a visit from Eyes on Animals inspectors, poultry slaughterhouse Remkes has made some technical changes in the conveyer belt (that brings the crates with live birds towards the Anglia Autoflow stunner) to reduce the vibrations, sound and abrupt movements. These small changes will have a big influence on bird welfare as birds are very sensitive to sudden movements, … [Read more...] about Remkes poultry slaughterhouse (NL) makes changes to decrease animal stress

Eyes on Animals team at Remkes

This morning a team from Eyes on Animals visited Remkes poultry slaughterhouse in Epe (NL). Remkes mainly slaughters breeder broilers. Calf slaughterhouse Vitelco (NL) places rubber mats in pens for fragile animals

October 26, 2017

Isolation pen for fragile/suspect calves

After our suggestion, calf slaughterhouse Vitelco (NL) has placed rubber mats in the isolation pens for fragile/suspect calves. At Dutch slaughterhouses, the authorities (NVWA) insist that suspect animals (for example animals with an infection, wound or abscess) only be slaughtered at the end of the day under the belief that they could cause contamination of the … [Read more...] about Calf slaughterhouse Vitelco (NL) places rubber mats in pens for fragile animals

Poultry slaughterhouse Heijs in Leek (NL) not interested in visit of Eyes on Animals

October 24, 2017

Slaughterhouse Heijs Leek

Today we brought an unannounced visit to poultry slaughterhouse Heijs in Leek. We hoped to share ideas on how to reduce suffering during the transport, handling and stunning of poultry. The director told us he wasn’t interested in talking to Eyes on Animals directly. He rather wanted us to talk to Nepluvi (stakeholder for poultry industry). Our experience is that talking … [Read more...] about Poultry slaughterhouse Heijs in Leek (NL) not interested in visit of Eyes on Animals

Rendering animals unconscious before slaughter

More improvements in Ghana to report on : after the UDS slaughterhouse in Tamale now the Cape Coast Campus slaughterhouse is using the captive bolts we gave them to stun the animals (cattle, shee, goats and pigs) before slaughter. We know slaughter is never a pretty site but imagine what it looks like when animals are left fully conscious while having their throats slit. … [Read more...] about Cape Coast Campus slaughterhouse now renders animals unconscious before slaughter, Ghana

Visit of Vitelco calf slaughterhouse (NL)

October 13, 2017

Moving to the restraint box

On the 13th of October we visited Vitelco Calf slaughterhouse in Den Bosch. Vitelco slaughters 350,000 rosé and white meat calves each year. The unloading went smoothly because, from the truck, the calves could immediately walk into the lairage. There were no sharp turns or dead corners that could cause confusion. To move the calves to the stunner, use was made of the … [Read more...] about Visit of Vitelco calf slaughterhouse (NL)

🐄 Koe met kalf aan de voet produceert niet automatisch minder melk.

Onderzoek laat zien dat de totale melkproductie vergelijkbaar kan zijn. Het verschil zit vooral in de melk die het kalf zelf opneemt. 👇
