EonA and WACPAW build a trolley to reduce pain of downer animals at Bolgatanga abattoir, Ghana

January 2, 2024

New trolley funded by EonA and WACPAW in a slaughterhouse in Ghana

Sadly the quality of many roads and trucks in Ghana are such that many animals suffer greatly during transport. Potholes and lack of suspension are just some of the causes. Cattle selected to go to slaughter are sometimes already weak or injured and thus frequently arrive as total downers. Without captive bolt stunners or proper unloading equipment these animals are always … [Read more...] about EonA and WACPAW build a trolley to reduce pain of downer animals at Bolgatanga abattoir, Ghana

Meeting with TSE and World Halal Union to show them horrendous suffering in Turkish abattoirs

November 14, 2023

two butchers are cutting the throat of a full conscious cattle in a restraint box

This afternoon we met with Ahmet Gelir who works for the World Halal Union and TSE (Turkish Standards Institute). TSE has a protocol for how animals must be slaughtered which is used as a basis for 37 Islamic countries that belong to World Halal Union. In their protocol there is a paragraph stating that animals must not be stunned during slaughter. The only exception is … [Read more...] about Meeting with TSE and World Halal Union to show them horrendous suffering in Turkish abattoirs

Visit of a second slaughterhouse near Balikisir that wants to stun but is not allowed

November 13, 2023

Asalet with a stunner at a Islamic slaughterhouses that want to stun their animals

We visited another cattle and sheep slaughterhouse near Balikisir, one that we had never been to before. They already knew about the advantages of pre-stunning the animals before tethering their leg and cutting their throats but claim to not be able to perform stunning at their plant. In the past they even had a stunning system in place but "only used it when the … [Read more...] about Visit of a second slaughterhouse near Balikisir that wants to stun but is not allowed

Slaughterhouse in Balikisir returns to slaughtering all animals without stunning

November 13, 2023

a man cuts the throat of a sheep

A very depressing and frustrating day in Turkey today. A slaughterhouse in Balikisir that slaughters cattle and sheep was quite enthusiastic about using a stunner to render animals unconscious prior to shackling and cutting their throats when we visited 1.5 years ago. We instructed them back then on how to stun and leased them one of our captive bolt stunners for free. … [Read more...] about Slaughterhouse in Balikisir returns to slaughtering all animals without stunning

Improvement at Tamale abattoir in Ghana – trolleys for downer cattle

October 17, 2023

downer cow placed on a trolley and rolled into the slaughter hall

One of the most horrible things the WACPAW (local NGO in Ghana that we work with) and EonA teams face during our work in Ghana is what happens to downer cows, especially at abattoirs in the Muslim region not yet accepting stunning. The animals are dragged into the slaughter hall, still fully conscious and sometimes even by ropes around their necks. We can get angry about … [Read more...] about Improvement at Tamale abattoir in Ghana – trolleys for downer cattle

Welfare-workshop on stunning at Karabük abattoir, Turkey

September 18, 2023

Training at Karabük slaughterhouse in Turkey

These photos are from Karabük slaughterhouse in Turkey where an EonA team, with the help of Haytap, held a welfare-worshop today. EonA educated the staff and some of the owners of cattle present about how a captive bolt stunner works and why rendering the animals unconscious first before slaughter reduces a lot of the pain and fear the animals go through. Asalet also … [Read more...] about Welfare-workshop on stunning at Karabük abattoir, Turkey

Visit to Mulder goat and sheep slaughterhouse, NL

September 7, 2023

Today Eyes on Animals was asked by the owner of Mulder abattoir to discuss future ideas the plant could take into account to help reduce fear and pain of goats and sheep when slaughtered.  Awhile ago, Mulder abattoir went on fire and a lot of the plant was damaged. They thus had to shut down and are now in the midst of re-building – a perfect chance to start from … [Read more...] about Visit to Mulder goat and sheep slaughterhouse, NL

Visit to Van Rooi pig slaughterhouse in Helmond (NL) during heat

September 6, 2023

Today, we conducted an unannounced visit to Van Rooi pig slaughterhouse. We chose a later time in the afternoon (starting at 17:00) because the temperature was expected to rise as the day progressed. At Van Rooi, pigs are delivered until late in the evening (around 20:00). It was 32-33°C in the sun during our visit. At Van Rooi, drivers who need to wait before … [Read more...] about Visit to Van Rooi pig slaughterhouse in Helmond (NL) during heat

Visit to VION Pig Slaughterhouse in Boxtel During Heat

September 6, 2023

Today, we paid an unannounced visit to the VION pig slaughterhouse in Boxtel (NL). At VION in Boxtel, we have often observed chauffeurs waiting for many hours before pigs could be unloaded. We have also frequently seen trucks, fully loaded with pigs, standing outside the canopy in the sun. Because the situation did not improve sufficiently, we filed an enforcement request … [Read more...] about Visit to VION Pig Slaughterhouse in Boxtel During Heat

Dear friends,

Ever since I was a little girl, one thing has haunted me: intelligent, curious, social animals kept in deprived environments and slaughtered under painful conditions.
