New film on the fate of Irish unweaned calves on “illegal” export routes that EU tolerates

January 14, 2022

Ireland continues to break EU feeding laws for unweaned calves during transport when they export them to mainland Europe via roll-on roll-off ferry. From the moment the calves are loaded on the trucks in Ireland to the moment they are finally given feed/milk after arrival in France at least 24 - 30 hours have gone by. Milk is the only type of “ feed”  these young animals … [Read more...] about New film on the fate of Irish unweaned calves on “illegal” export routes that EU tolerates

Inspection of Westfort sow and boar slaughterhouse in Gorinchem, NL

November 18, 2021

Today a team visited Westfort slaughterhouse in Gorinchem. This plant slaughters culled adult sows and boars, that were used for breeding. We were told that we are always welcome to visit and even just show up. This level of transparency is very positive. The employees at this plant, just like at the other Westfort plant in IJsselstein, are thoroughly trained and receive a … [Read more...] about Inspection of Westfort sow and boar slaughterhouse in Gorinchem, NL

More and more closed livestock trucks are on the roads in the Netherlands and pose risk to animal-welfare

November 9, 2021

Already back in 2013 we alerted authorities across the Netherlands and Europe, as well as industry stakeholders involved in animal transport and slaughter, about the phenomenon of closed livestock trucks growing in numbers among mainly Dutch transporters. These trucks are in violation of the European transport laws as they limit or block all visual inspection of the … [Read more...] about More and more closed livestock trucks are on the roads in the Netherlands and pose risk to animal-welfare

Some pig assembly centers allow and some do not allow EonA to visit

November 8, 2021

In recent years Eyes on Animals has visited several assembly centers for sows and piglets in the Netherlands. Sows and piglets are collected from different farms and gathered at these centers to be sent to slaughterhouses abroad. They are sent for slaughter because they are less productive or have (small) abnormalities. For sows it often concerns fertility issues, … [Read more...] about Some pig assembly centers allow and some do not allow EonA to visit

Further introducing and teaching stunning to slaughterhouse workers in Turkey

October 9, 2021

This morning we were at a slaughterhouse near Bolu. Eyes on Animals has been visiting this plant for several years now. But now we were equipped with stunners. We taught the workers how to use a stunner and explained how, when used correctly, it renders the animal at least insensitive to pain right before the cut. First they practiced on the heads of already butchered … [Read more...] about Further introducing and teaching stunning to slaughterhouse workers in Turkey

Introducing and teaching stunning at slaughterhouses near Bandirma, TR

October 7, 2021

We visited 2 slaughterhouses today not too far away from Bandirma in Turkey. The owner and slaughterers at both plants were very enthusiastic about the captive bolt stunners and the opportunity it gives them to render the animals unconscious prior to cutting their throat and a safer working environment. Asalet from our team taught them how to use it, where to aim, and how … [Read more...] about Introducing and teaching stunning at slaughterhouses near Bandirma, TR

Follow-up visit to a Turkish cattle slaughterhouse equipped with one of our stunners

October 6, 2021

EonA team is travelling through Turkey to check on slaughterhouses that got a captive bolt pistol from us before corona. Purpose is to check if the stunners have been well maintained and still working well. This slaughterhouse, 2 hrs from Istanbul, had been open towards stunning and grateful that we provided them with a stunner several years ago, as it is much better at … [Read more...] about Follow-up visit to a Turkish cattle slaughterhouse equipped with one of our stunners

Observations of heat-stress in pigs transported in different types of trucks in the Netherlands

September 8, 2021

Today, in connection with the warm weather (28 degrees Celsius, 50% relative humidity) Eyes on Animals set out to inspect different types of pig transportation trucks.  We took temperature and humidity measurements, checked the load density and observed the behaviour of the animals. The trucks were parked under a roofing with fans.  Three cross-ventilated … [Read more...] about Observations of heat-stress in pigs transported in different types of trucks in the Netherlands

Deformed broiler chickens put on transport

August 20, 2021

At approx. 9AM Eyes on Animals inspected a poultry-truck parked up along the A6 Highway as the driver was running early on his way to Storteboom slaughterhouse in Kornhorn. Inside the truck we saw several broilers with seriously deformed legs. They were barely able to stand or walk. See a video here >> The fact that we found broilers in this condition is … [Read more...] about Deformed broiler chickens put on transport

Our most recent newsletter

Dear friends,

After years of our fieldwork and our enforcement requests, the NVWA (the Dutch government inspection authority) is finally taking action.

The NVWA has made it clear to the entire calf export-import industry between Ireland and the Netherlands: transporting unweaned calves for more than 30 hours without milk will no longer be tolerated.

#dierenwelzijn
