EonA team is travelling through Turkey to check on slaughterhouses that got a captive bolt pistol from us before corona. Purpose is to check if the stunners have been well maintained and still working well. This slaughterhouse, 2 hrs from Istanbul, had been open towards stunning and grateful that we provided them with a stunner several years ago, as it is much better at reducing animal suffering and also makes the work safer for the employees. They are still using our stunner to render a percentage of the cattle unconscious prior to cutting their throats. However, some clients still find stunning taboo and refuse it. In Turkey there is a fatwa declaring stunning to be completely in line with Halal requirements and Dyanet (Religious authority in Ankara) also accept it, but still it will take years to break the taboo among the general public and get stunning always in practice. Some official veterinarians from city authorities are also fussing about it and trying to forbid it.
We are doing our best at helping slaughterhouses here getting stunning equipment and teaching them how to use it, and explain why they are using a modern tool to help decrease suffering, in line with the essence of Prophet Mohammeds’ teachings.
