Introduction and training on use of stunners for cattle slaughterhouses near Izmir, Turkey

January 8, 2022

Asalet and Berker from Eyes on Animal are near Izmir in Turkey showing slaughter personnel and officials how captive bolt pistols work and explaining the benefit of using them during slaughter to at least render the cattle insensitive to pain before their neck is cut. In Turkey cattle are normally fully conscious during restraint, hoisting and neck-cutting, with animals … [Read more...] about Introduction and training on use of stunners for cattle slaughterhouses near Izmir, Turkey

Inspection of Feenstra pig slaughterhouse and slaughter of Zonvarken’s pigs there

December 1, 2021

Today we visited Feenstra, a non-intensive slaughterhouse (20 pigs per hour) in The Netherlands with Beter Leven Keurmerk. We went today because the pigs from the new pig meat company "Zonvarken" were going to be slaughtered. We had advised Zonvarkens on what they could do to limit fear and pain during transport and slaughter of their animals. One of our suggestions was to … [Read more...] about Inspection of Feenstra pig slaughterhouse and slaughter of Zonvarken’s pigs there

Inspection of Westfort sow and boar slaughterhouse in Gorinchem, NL

November 18, 2021

Today a team visited Westfort slaughterhouse in Gorinchem. This plant slaughters culled adult sows and boars, that were used for breeding. We were told that we are always welcome to visit and even just show up. This level of transparency is very positive. The employees at this plant, just like at the other Westfort plant in IJsselstein, are thoroughly trained and receive a … [Read more...] about Inspection of Westfort sow and boar slaughterhouse in Gorinchem, NL

Small cattle and sheep slaughterhouse in Istanbul adopts pre-stunning

November 11, 2021

More good news from Turkey. After several visits and long talks, another slaughterhouse in Turkey sees the major benefits of stunning their sheep and cattle before cutting their throats. Stunning animals, by using a captive bolt pistol for example, renders the animals insensitive to pain during the slaughter process. This is a step forward, as normally the animals are … [Read more...] about Small cattle and sheep slaughterhouse in Istanbul adopts pre-stunning

Further introducing and teaching stunning to slaughterhouse workers in Turkey

October 9, 2021

This morning we were at a slaughterhouse near Bolu. Eyes on Animals has been visiting this plant for several years now. But now we were equipped with stunners. We taught the workers how to use a stunner and explained how, when used correctly, it renders the animal at least insensitive to pain right before the cut. First they practiced on the heads of already butchered … [Read more...] about Further introducing and teaching stunning to slaughterhouse workers in Turkey

Meeting with Turkish Ministry of Agriculture about slaughter

October 8, 2021

This afternoon we had our meeting with two authorities at the Turkish Ministry of Agriculture, responsible for overseeing animal slaughter. They were shocked by some of the footage we showed them, of animals being cruelly restrained, chained and cut all while still conscious and struggling for their life. We showed them how a stunner works and showed them footage of the … [Read more...] about Meeting with Turkish Ministry of Agriculture about slaughter

Introducing and teaching stunning at slaughterhouses near Bandirma, TR

October 7, 2021

We visited 2 slaughterhouses today not too far away from Bandirma in Turkey. The owner and slaughterers at both plants were very enthusiastic about the captive bolt stunners and the opportunity it gives them to render the animals unconscious prior to cutting their throat and a safer working environment. Asalet from our team taught them how to use it, where to aim, and how … [Read more...] about Introducing and teaching stunning at slaughterhouses near Bandirma, TR

Follow-up visit to a Turkish cattle slaughterhouse equipped with one of our stunners

October 6, 2021

EonA team is travelling through Turkey to check on slaughterhouses that got a captive bolt pistol from us before corona. Purpose is to check if the stunners have been well maintained and still working well. This slaughterhouse, 2 hrs from Istanbul, had been open towards stunning and grateful that we provided them with a stunner several years ago, as it is much better at … [Read more...] about Follow-up visit to a Turkish cattle slaughterhouse equipped with one of our stunners

Odin consciously chooses small scale pig slaughterhouse Thönes Naturverbund

October 1, 2021

Organic Supermarket chain ‘Odin’ has decided that from now on their pigs will be slaughtered at Thönes Naturverbund in Germany, because of the low slaughter speed and calmer treatment of pigs.   In 2015 Eyes on Animals visited Thönes Naturverbund and we shared our positive findings via a website-article and film. Thönes Naturverbund has … [Read more...] about Odin consciously chooses small scale pig slaughterhouse Thönes Naturverbund

Canopy at Clazing, but EonA not allowed to take a look

September 9, 2021

Due to today’s warm weather , Eyes on Animals decided to visit a public parking area where poultry trucks from Clazing slaughterhouse are known to park while awaiting their turn to unload. However, today, no poultry trucks were found.  The manager of Clazing informed us by phone that their trucks now park on their own premises. For this purpose, a canopy with fans … [Read more...] about Canopy at Clazing, but EonA not allowed to take a look
