UK MP tables amendment to new UK Animal Welfare Bill to also protect hens during catching!

January 25, 2022

Henry Smith, MP of the Conservative Party in the UK (the party in power), is asking to phase out the current rough method of catching poultry (by their legs and holding them upside down, 4 to 5 per hand). He wants poultry to be caught gently and upright, loaded upright and given more headspace in the transport containers. … [Read more...] about UK MP tables amendment to new UK Animal Welfare Bill to also protect hens during catching!

New film by Eyes on Animals showing how spent hens are caught in Europe

December 10, 2021

Screenshot New film by Eyes on Animals schowing how spent hens are caught in Europe

Eyes on Animals has been documenting how spent laying hens are caught and loaded in Europe. This is just some of the footage and it is not even the worst. Spent hens raised on large farms are caught like this around the world and sadly even European officials and Member States have been tolerating it, despite it clearly being in violation of EU legislation. EU … [Read more...] about New film by Eyes on Animals showing how spent hens are caught in Europe

Chickens Rondeel Wintelre partially not caught upright

October 25, 2021

Tonight, a team from EonA performed a random check at Rondeel in Wintelre during the catching of their spent hens. In the previous week, we tried to contact the director of Rondeel several times but were unsuccessful. Finally, we left him a voicemail message announcing our plan to visit. That we would not participate in the catching, as we had done the previous 3 years, … [Read more...] about Chickens Rondeel Wintelre partially not caught upright

Compliments to Manor Farm “de Vlinderstrik” for the upright catching of laying hens

October 6, 2021

At Manor Farm de Vlinderstrik, laying hens were caught upright instead of upside down by their legs. Poultry farmer Albert Boersen shared this today on Twitter. He also wrote about bringing them to the slaughterhouse himself and asking them to “treat the chickens with the same care as he had done”.    We are delighted that an increasing number of poultry … [Read more...] about Compliments to Manor Farm “de Vlinderstrik” for the upright catching of laying hens

September 21, 2021

Last night Eyes on Animals gave a short instruction presentation on the EonA upright method of catching laying hens to the commercial catchers hired by Kipster. At Kipster the hens are no longer caught in the conventional way (3-6 at a time held upside down by a leg, per hand) but rather 1-2 at a time and kept upright all the time, supported by under their … [Read more...] about EonA helps and supervises upright catching of Kipster’s spent hens, NL

EonA at ILVO to give a talk on our upright chicken-catching, BE

September 16, 2021

The Belgian Ministry of Agriculture is financing research into the welfare of poultry during catching, wanting to evaluate conventional catching (3-6 birds per hand held upside down by their legs) with the EonA upright method (1 to 2 birds at a time, never suspended upside down by the legs but always held upright) and, in the case of broilers, also evaluate catching by the … [Read more...] about EonA at ILVO to give a talk on our upright chicken-catching, BE

Big compliment for catching teams who catch and load the chickens upright

July 28, 2021

For several years, EonA has been busy training several catching teams to catch poultry according to the upright method. Gemril was the first to start with this method, for which we are grateful. The catching teams of Van den Broek, Den Ouden, Jekal and Pots soon followed. We would like to thank the managers of these catching organisations for the fact that they wanted to … [Read more...] about Big compliment for catching teams who catch and load the chickens upright

Supervising and assisting with upright catching of hens at Demeter Boerveenshof, NL

July 14, 2021

Tonight 8300 laying hens were caught and loaded at a Demeter egg farm in Drenthe, NL. The EonA upright method was used, which is much more humane than the conventional method when birds are grabbed and hung upside down by their legs. The trained catchers from the commercial catching company Smeding did a very good job. Thanks also to Rolf, the Demeter farmer from … [Read more...] about Supervising and assisting with upright catching of hens at Demeter Boerveenshof, NL
