Supervising and assisting with upright catching of hens at Demeter Boerveenshof, NL

July 14, 2021

Tonight 8300 laying hens were caught and loaded at a Demeter egg farm in Drenthe, NL. The EonA upright method was used, which is much more humane than the conventional method when birds are grabbed and hung upside down by their legs. The trained catchers from the commercial catching company Smeding did a very good job. Thanks also to Rolf, the Demeter farmer from Boerveenshof, for believing in this more welfare-friendly method of catching and putting it into practice on his farm ! This is the second time he is catching his birds this way.  He made the switch already over 3 years ago. Eggs produced and labelled as Demeter in the Netherlands are now all coming from farms where the hens, at the end of their laying “career” are caught and loaded upright so that their welfare is better protected.
