Olymel pig slaughterhouse, Saint-Esprit, Quebec, Canada

January 28, 2019

Olymel

This afternoon we wanted to check on the welfare of pigs being transported to Olymel slaughterhouse in Saint-Esprit. We had heard from a couple of truck drivers that when they have a technical failure, the trucks arriving with pigs are forced to just wait, for hours and hours regardless if the temperatures outside are freezing cold or very hot. Their lairage is not big … [Read more...] about Olymel pig slaughterhouse, Saint-Esprit, Quebec, Canada

Practical training of official Road Transport Inspectors (ITD) in Siedlce, Poland – Day 2

January 18, 2019

Chicken transport

Today is a busy day. Assisting the ITD, Eyes on Animals and TSB|AWF are conducting inspections of livestock trucks to check that the animal-welfare legislation is respected, and if not, that it be enforced. The first livestock truck stopped is from a Polish company and is carrying poultry. Poultry transports are often very problematic due to the sheer numbers and density, … [Read more...] about Practical training of official Road Transport Inspectors (ITD) in Siedlce, Poland – Day 2

Practical training of offical Road Transport Inspectors (ITD) in Siedlce, Poland – Day 1

January 17, 2019

Police training

Today the TSB|AWF and Eyes on Animals team joined the Road Transport Inspection (ITD) east of Warsaw to assist in inspecting animal transports. The first animal lorry stopped for inspection is empty, however the design of this vehicle raises our concern- the loading ramp at the back is much too steep and the lateral protectors not high enough to prevent an animal from … [Read more...] about Practical training of offical Road Transport Inspectors (ITD) in Siedlce, Poland – Day 1

No permission from Raaijmakers to view the catching and loading of turkeys

January 15, 2019

During the evening of 15 January 2019, Eyes on Animals followed an empty turkey truck from company Mantrans. The truck was on its way to a farm owned by Raaijmakers where turkeys were due to be caught and loaded for slaughter. Our goal was to observe this process and give advice on reducing stress, pain and possible injuries caused by the catching and loading process. … [Read more...] about No permission from Raaijmakers to view the catching and loading of turkeys

Inspection of turkey transport to observe catching and loading

January 15, 2019

Turkey transport

Tonight a team from Eyes on Animals was on the road inspecting poultry trucks. Around 22:00 we spotted an empty turkey truck from company Mantrans on the A50. We decided to follow the transporter in the hope of seeing both the catching and loading of the turkeys. Towards the turkey farm the driver stopped at a weighbridge. The driver informed us that we would only be … [Read more...] about Inspection of turkey transport to observe catching and loading

Dying sheep not able to be helped because truck did not provide access

December 21, 2018

Downer lamb

TSB|AWF trailed trucks transporting lambs to a slaughterhouse in Italy. One lamb on board was suffering horribly and in need of being put out of her misery but the veterinarian and police on site were not able to because there was no access to the lamb. In the compartment and on the side where she was lying, there were no access doors built in the truck. Result: the … [Read more...] about Dying sheep not able to be helped because truck did not provide access

Kumasi cattle and pig slaughterhouses, Ghana

October 21, 2018

Pig at Kumasi slaughterhouse

Today we arrived at 5am at Kumasi slaughterhouse and first checked on the section where pigs are slaughtered. Pigs were grabbed from the lairage area and thrown, literally, over the gates. They fell hard on to the ground. They are then chased towards the kill area, which is full of old broken equipment (leftover from when a Canadian government organization had helped them … [Read more...] about Kumasi cattle and pig slaughterhouses, Ghana

Good measures against heat at poultry slaughterhouse GPS in Nunspeet

September 1, 2018

Vans at GPS

Last summer Eyes on Animals made an unannounced visit to poultry slaughterhouse GPS in Nunspeet. Behind the slaughterhouse, GPS has a woody area where trucks can stand in the shade. There were several large fans next to the trucks. In the holding room, GPS has large fans with sprinklers - this allows the temperature to be brought down considerably in case of heat. GPS … [Read more...] about Good measures against heat at poultry slaughterhouse GPS in Nunspeet

Visit to duck slaughterhouse Tomassen in Ermelo

August 23, 2018

Duck slaughterhouse Tomassen

Today our team visited duck slaughterhouse Tomassen in Ermelo. Tomassen is the only duck slaughterhouse in the Netherlands. The duck meat is largely exported to Western Europe. They also serve the Asian market. A small part goes to Dutch supermarkets and catering. At Tomassen, ducks are stunned with an electric water bath. There is a lot of discussion about this stunning … [Read more...] about Visit to duck slaughterhouse Tomassen in Ermelo
