More good news from Turkey. After several visits and long talks, another slaughterhouse in Turkey sees the major benefits of stunning their sheep and cattle before cutting their throats. Stunning animals, by using a captive bolt pistol for example, renders the animals insensitive to pain during the slaughter process. This is a step forward, as normally the animals are fully conscious while they are hoisted and while their necks are cut to be bled out. The owner of this plant, and one of the main butchers, is so enthusiastic about the stunner we leased out to them, that they are now promoting it to their colleagues and friends. One of them is also a Religious scholar and publishes books on the Muslim faith. He is now promoting stunning, as a modern tool to further reduce some of the pain and fear animals experience during slaughter, which he claims fits perfectly into the essence of his religion. We would like to thank both of these men for their warm welcoming today, their positive cooperation and curiosity to learn new things, and their compassion towards the animals they slaughter.
