Meeting with person responsible for Corlu slaughterhouse, Turkey

December 18, 2017

Stunner in useLast year this slaughterhouse bought a pneumatic stunner from a German company and started to offer its’ clients the option of having their cattle stunned before being cut for slaughter. This was a breakthrough, as we have never seen stunners in use at any of the slaughterhouses we have visited in Turkey and stunning is still a taboo subject among many. The common belief among most Muslims in Turkey is that an animal must only be slaughtered by the use of a sharp knife and no other equipment beforehand. At the time about 10% of the clients using Corlu slaughterhouse to slaughter their cattle chose for pre-stunning. Today we met with the official responsible for Corlu slaughterhouse. She told us that now that more and more of their clients have seen the welfare advantages of pre-stunning, 50% of the cattle slaughtered at their plant are now pre-stunned.

Dear friends,

Despite the extreme heat and high humidity these last days still tens of thousands of pigs were transported to Dutch slaughterhouses. We visited the two largest: VION in Boxtel and VION in Apeldoorn.

🐖 U leest het goed: 20.000 (!) varkens per dag.
En dat is nog maar 1 slachthuis.
“Vion slacht zo'n 20.000 dieren per dag, 1.250 dieren per uur. Zodra er een verstoring komt in het proces bij de slachterij, ontstaat er een wachtrij voor de deur.” #slacht

👎 Deze truck stond gisteren rond 17:20 pal in de zon geparkeerd buiten het terrein van Vion in Boxtel. We vroegen de chauffeur te gaan rijden – om de varkens enige verkoeling te geven. Dit deed hij echter niet. De truck heeft ruim 1,5 uur stilgestaan. #hittestress #veetransport
