We have received wonderful news. Stichting Abri voor Dieren has decided to financially support our project to reduce the suffering of sick and injured birds on poultry farms. Thanks to their contribution, we can test and help introduce more humane ways of putting these animals out of their misery.
Poultry farmers deal almost daily with birds that become sick, injured or weakened and need to be put out of their misery. Currently, this is often done by cervical dislocation – breaking or stretching the neck. Contrary to what is often believed, this method does not cause immediate unconsciousness and is very painful.
Of course, we too would prefer that no animals had to be killed at all. But this is not the reality on poultry farms. What we can change is the way these animals are put out of their misery.
With the support of Stichting Abri voor Dieren, we will work together with scientists, veterinarians, poultry farmers and other experts to test and help introduce more humane alternatives in practice. Animal welfare will be our priority: a method must cause immediate unconsciousness without pain, keep stress to an absolute minimum and work reliably. At the same time, it needs to be practical to use, because only then will it actually be adopted on poultry farms.
When an animal becomes sick or injured, they deserve proper treatment or – when recovery is no longer possible – at the very least, a death that ends their suffering quickly and without pain.
