EonA team members Madelaine, Kees, Jan and Lesley finishing up a 2-day training of all employees working at a pig slaughter plant. Together with the help of Temple Grandin and the open- attitude of this plant we got major improvements in place over the past 3 years. This plant did not want to switch to CO2 gas because of its aversive effect but wanted to see if electric stunning could be a viable and much more “humane” alternative. A huge investment in extra infrastructure leading to much less time pressure, no rushing of the pigs and no handling tools that create noise or pain. Part of the “improvement plan” was giving training courses in pig behavior, pig intelligence and low-stress handling techniques to the workers responsible for moving the pigs through the system. We are grateful for this direct action that has lead to a drastic decrease in animal suffering.
