Observation of cattle transports Vion slaughterhouse in Tilburg

September 15, 2010

vion_tilburg

Eyes on Animals received several complaints from people within the transport sector concerning Vion in Tilburg. They claim that double-deck trucks not providing enough headroom for cattle were being regularly accepted causing unfair competition for companies that were trying to respect the "10cm above the withers" regulation. In the morning we observed 7 double-deck cattle … [Read more...] about Observation of cattle transports Vion slaughterhouse in Tilburg

Fire codes for animal farms same as for warehouses storing toilet-paper

September 14, 2010

scientific_14_09_10

Photo: Jack Tummers (www.jacktummers.nl) Since 2006 over 1 million animals in the Netherlands have fallen victim to barn fires (exact number is 1,142,083). Barns fall under the same jurisdiction as "light industry" and thus are not equiped with sprinkler systems nor have to follow strict regulations regarding type of building material used or safe housing of electric … [Read more...] about Fire codes for animal farms same as for warehouses storing toilet-paper

Adequate headspace finally for cattle being transported to Vion slaughterhouse in Tilburg

September 5, 2010

stahoogte_vion_250911

On the 5th of September 2010, Eyes on Animals discretely observed cattle trucks arriving at VION slaughterhouse in Tilburg. We saw a number of double-decker transport trucks in which the cattle had insufficient headspace. As a result, the cattle were not able to maintain their natural posture, which could in turn cause serious injury to head and back. At the time, we … [Read more...] about Adequate headspace finally for cattle being transported to Vion slaughterhouse in Tilburg

Cattle loaded double-deck truck without enough space

July 22, 2010

cattle_loaded

We were disappointed to observe three transport companies load cattle from an assembly center onto double-deckers that did not provide enough head-space for the animals. In particular we were disappointed that one of the companies belongs to a quality system that we have faith in. We observed cattle on board Hans Snel, Hoekstra en Zon and J.A.Haan transport trucks where … [Read more...] about Cattle loaded double-deck truck without enough space

Inspection of Leeuwarden cattle market

July 22, 2010

leeuwarden_2010

Eyes on Animals would like to congratulate the managers of this cattle market, which has gone from a market with serious welfare problems in 2005 to one of the "best" we have inspected. Since our last visit in 2009, they have installed more water troughs and built individual pens for bulls. There was also no violent handling of the animals today. We did question why some … [Read more...] about Inspection of Leeuwarden cattle market

Dear friends,

A couple of years ago, while I was giving a talk at an animal welfare conference in the UK, an anthropologist from the University of Cambridge approached me. She conducts research in Mongolia and asked whether — if she could secure funding — we would be willing to help animals there. Where there is a will, there is a way, so I said yes to Liz!

Here is a reminder of what it is like for calves inside the trucks 🚚 This footage was taken at Rosslare Port, before the long ferry journey. They will have already been in the truck for several hours. Journeys can take 50 hours or more in total. No headroom, barely space to lie
