Inspection of a pig livestock truck from the Dutch company Vaex

December 3, 2008

Acceptable loading density and thick bedding

vaex_2009

Eyes on Animals trailed a livestock truck from the Dutch company Vaex from The Netherlands heading to Croatia. Recently Vaex had its licence to transport live animals removed by the Dutch Ministry of Agriculture due to repeated violations to the EU animal protection during transport legislation, so we asked the police in Germany to stop and inspect it. Vaex continues to export animals but now does so under another transport company name, Roke Trading. Unfortunately the law does not yet prohibit this. Nevertheless, we are relieved to observe that the transport company took the precautions necessary to protect the piglets during this journey- there is a thick layer of sawdust, the density is acceptable, the transport papers are correctly filled in, and there are two drivers.
