Hosting of large pork company, scientist and official from abroad to see Improved Automatic Electric stunning system as alternative to CO2

October 8, 2026

Today we hosted a visit at the slaughterhouse where, together with the slaughterhouse team and Dr. Temple Grandin, we developed an improved new automatic electric stunning system – to show that there are practical alternatives to the more painful CO₂ gas stunning.

We started this work because inhaling CO₂ causes distress and suffering, while we saw that there was still a lot of untapped potential in automatic electric stunning.

This time, a large pork company from a neighbouring European country came to see the system, together with an authoritiy and scientist. We’re keeping the details confidential for now, as discussions are still ongoing.

But it’s encouraging to see growing interest from the industry and authorities in moving away from CO₂ and exploring more humane alternatives.

The NVWA has made it clear to the entire calf export-import industry between Ireland and the Netherlands: transporting unweaned calves for more than 30 hours without milk will no longer be tolerated.
