Today was very hot out so we brought an unannounced visit to to poultry slaughterhouse Mieki in Hunsel. Mieki is part of Van Miert in Breukelen. At the time of our visit (around 16:30) there was no more supply of chickens. We spoke briefly with a Mieki employee. He informed us that they stop the slaughter quite early in Hunsel. According to him, there were no problems with heat stress because the air is kept cool with fans. The chickens are rendered unconscious with a Stork gas stunning system.
When asked if Mieki was interested in animal welfare advice from Eyes on Animals, the employee said that it would be better to come back later in the year and ask. Mieki will receive a new operational employee who will initially have to learn the ropes. We will contact Mieki again later in the year.
