Two EonA/AWF teams arrived in Turkey yesterday- one to focus on transport and the other on slaughter conditions. Today one of the teams (Lesley, Asalet and Dr. Ellen Eser, specialist on animal-welfare during transport and slaughter and official veterinarian from Germany) visited 3 slaughterhouses around Istanbul, “Narman”, “Ozlem” and “Elif”. We viewed their installations, plant layout and discussed practical ideas with the plant’s veterinarian and manager on how to reduce suffering and stress during handling, lairaging and slaughter at their plant. We watched videos together on alternative methods that are better for animal-welfare and pointed out good points too in their plant, to give them courage to continue in the right direction. Via open discussions and the spreading of practical knowledge we hope to achieve long-term improvements to animal-welfare standards in slaughterhouses.
