Training on how to use a stunner at Uşak Municipality Abattoir, Turkey

August 14, 2023

On August 14, 2023, our organization, Eyes on Animals, conducted a stunning and slaughtering training session at the Uşak Municipality Abattoir. I, Asalet Sancakdaroglu, represented our organization during this event. The president of the Animal Friends Association, HAYDOS, Ms. Türkan Dağdelen, took the lead in this endeavor. She introduced us to the officials at the municipality and accompanied us to the abattoir. Here, we introduced them to the stunning equipment and addressed their concerns about how it works. Questions arose, such as whether the Stunner operates on electricity or pressure. It appeared that people were quite unfamiliar with this equipment, and we explained the situation as comprehensively as possible. We provided them with the equipment for examination, demonstrated how to use it, showed films, and played videos of religious leaders endorsing this method of slaughter.

Subsequently, we moved to the abattoir to put our training into practice. The veterinary doctors decided to perform the stunning and slaughtering of three animals while choosing the conventional method for one. After the animals were slaughtered, it was noted that the meat and carcasses would be examined the next day to ensure no issues were present. A day later, we received pictures of the carcasses and were informed that they were quite satisfied with the results. They expressed their intent to report this to the relevant units within the abattoir and their interest in utilizing this equipment. It was an exceptionally successful endeavor. We extend our gratitude to the veterinarians we met during this process and to Türkan Hanım for her support to HAYDOS.
