New film on the fate of Irish unweaned calves on “illegal” export routes that EU tolerates

January 14, 2022

Ireland continues to break EU feeding laws for unweaned calves during transport when they export them to mainland Europe via roll-on roll-off ferry. From the moment the calves are loaded on the trucks in Ireland to the moment they are finally given feed/milk after arrival in France at least 24 - 30 hours have gone by. Milk is the only type of “ feed”  these young animals … [Read more...] about New film on the fate of Irish unweaned calves on “illegal” export routes that EU tolerates

Hunland, Europes’ largest animal transport and trading company, stops transport of unweaned calves

May 27, 2021

Hunland Group has publically announced it will go beyond the ambiguous EU rules and completely stop transporting unweaned calves under the age of 3 months. The reason for their decision is that calves cannot be given the proper care and feeding they need while cooped up on a truck.  Calves of this age are dependent on milk for nutrition, and cannot yet … [Read more...] about Hunland, Europes’ largest animal transport and trading company, stops transport of unweaned calves

IMPORTANT NEWS: Transport of unweaned calves by truck and ferry from Ireland to France systematically violates EU feeding intervals

June 15, 2020

Unweaned Calves

In a response to our questions, the EU Commission confirms that there is no derogation to the feeding intervals in the case of animals transported on RORO (roll-on roll-off) vessels. Animals transported on journeys including a RORO must be fed at the same frequency as ones transported solely by road. This means the journeys of unweaned calves being trucked from farms in … [Read more...] about IMPORTANT NEWS: Transport of unweaned calves by truck and ferry from Ireland to France systematically violates EU feeding intervals

Dear friends,

A couple of years ago, while I was giving a talk at an animal welfare conference in the UK, an anthropologist from the University of Cambridge approached me. She conducts research in Mongolia and asked whether — if she could secure funding — we would be willing to help animals there. Where there is a will, there is a way, so I said yes to Liz!
