Beerten piglet-slaughterhouse in Zieuwent (NL) has closed it’s doors

January 16, 2023

Beerten Slaughterhouse in Zieuwent, where mainly piglets are slaughtered, has closed it’s doors. The main reason for this decision is due to the stricter monitoring and enforcement by NVWA and rising energy costs.  Eyes on Animals visited Beerten at the end of 2019 and noted several malpractices. Piglets were not stunned and bled adequately. We also … [Read more...] about Beerten piglet-slaughterhouse in Zieuwent (NL) has closed it’s doors

Follow-up inspection Kumasi slaughterhouse, Ghana

December 13, 2022

Today the EonA and WACPAW team in Ghana went to Kumasi Abattoir, one of the largest slaughterhouses in Ghana. Here, 300 cattle, 50 pigs and dozens of goats are slaughtered every day. It is a slaughterhouse that was built with money from the Canadian International Develoment Agency 25 years ago and back then was state of the art. However, many things no longer work and … [Read more...] about Follow-up inspection Kumasi slaughterhouse, Ghana

Ampoma farm and slaughter slab, Ghana‬

December 8, 2022

Today the team from WACPAW and Eyes on Animals, along with our trainees from The Vegan Village in Uganda, visited Ampoma farm and slaughter slab in the Eastern Region of Accra. The pigs at this farm looked quite healthy and well fed. The farm pens were clean, had adequate water drinkers and the pigs had plenty of space. Sadly they did not have any foraging material though, … [Read more...] about Ampoma farm and slaughter slab, Ghana‬

EonA and WACPAW visit pig slaughterhouse Feenstra in Drachten (NL)

May 25, 2022

Today, together with Safian Abdul Rahman (director of the Ghanaian organisation WACPAW), we visited slaughterhouse Feenstra in Drachten (NL). Feenstra is a small slaughterhouse where pigs are calmly handled and manually stunned in their group. Because of this, stress is kept to a minimum. We wanted to show this to Safian so he could take this knowledge back to Ghana. … [Read more...] about EonA and WACPAW visit pig slaughterhouse Feenstra in Drachten (NL)

Revisit of Pali slaughterhouse to see the adjustments they made

April 7, 2022

Today Eyes on Animals visited Pali slaughterhouse in Geldrop (NL). Since our first visit in 2018 Pali has put several of our recommendations into practice. They closed the sides of the raceway to prevent distractions, have improved the light in the single file raceway, hung up several banners to improve handling and improved the pen for suspect-pigs. They also changed the … [Read more...] about Revisit of Pali slaughterhouse to see the adjustments they made

Stress level at Van Rooi pig slaughterhouse reduced (NL)

April 1, 2022

Van Rooi pig slaughterhouse has implemented several changes following the advice of Eyes on Animals. A large part of the automatic push gates (that lead the pigs to the co2 stunner) were removed and replaced by quiet staff. This has significantly reduced  stress levels amongst the pigs. They walked more calmly and stress behavior, such as jumping on top of each … [Read more...] about Stress level at Van Rooi pig slaughterhouse reduced (NL)

Follow-up inspection of Gosschalk slaughterhouse, NL

March 28, 2022

Today Eyes on Animals was again at Gosschalk, a Dutch slaughterhouse that had had many serious welfare issues caught on tape and exposed last year by Varkens in Nood. We were hesitant to respond to Gosschalks' request for help at first but decided to test them out to see how serious they were about really reducing animal stress and pain. Several months after our first … [Read more...] about Follow-up inspection of Gosschalk slaughterhouse, NL
