Leeuwarden (NL) animal market has good facilities

May 2, 2023

Eyes on Animals is not a fan of livestock markets, as this stopover adds to the stress of animals in transit from farm to slaughter. However, we must admit that Leeuwarden animal market has at least invested in very good facilities, much better than other markets we have inspected.  All animals are loosely housed in pens and never tethered. The entire floor is covered in … [Read more...] about Leeuwarden (NL) animal market has good facilities

Unannounced inspection of Leeuwarden cow market

April 19, 2023

An EonA team conducted an unannounced visit to Leeuwarden cull-cow market this late afternoon. We have been regularly visiting and trying to work with this market since 2004. Back then we regularly saw tethered cows tangled up in their ropes, downer cows being dragged by chains into small trucks, lactating cows dripping milk and not being milked, injured animals being … [Read more...] about Unannounced inspection of Leeuwarden cow market

Inspection horse market Hedel

November 7, 2022

Eyes on Animals visited the yearly horse market in Hedel this week. We joined the House of Animals’ team, who have been hiring professional bodyguards the last few years, in order to protect our teams against malicious visitors of this horse market.  When we arrived around midnight, there were no horses/ponies yet, so we could get a good overview of the layout of … [Read more...] about Inspection horse market Hedel

Today a team from Eyes on Animals and Ethical Farming Ireland, accompanied by Member of European Parliament Anja Hazekamp, visited Enniscorthy calf market, just south of Dublin. Many unweaned calves exported to the Netherlands and Spain and Belgium come from this market. Some of the calves at todays’ market are only 10 days of age. We are told that they will be held back … [Read more...] about Inspection on Enniscorthy calf market in Ireland

Visit to Leeuwarden cull-cow market, NL

June 23, 2021

Eyes on Animals conducted an unannounced visit to Leeuwarden cull-cow and bull market yesterday, in the Netherlands. We have been working at this market for years, ever since we saw downers being dragged onto trucks there 15 years ago and animals tethered tightly onto railings, unable to lie down. It is much better now and recently they moved to a new location, where they … [Read more...] about Visit to Leeuwarden cull-cow market, NL

Visiting assembly centers to advise on the handling of sick and injured pigs

December 15, 2020

Today Eyes on Animals visited several assembly centers to advise them on the humane killing of sick and injured pigs that are prohibited from further transport. From earlier visits we concluded that emergency killing is not always performed correctly. For example electric tongs or captive bolt pistols are not positioned correctly on the head or the wrong cartridges are … [Read more...] about Visiting assembly centers to advise on the handling of sick and injured pigs

Sawyerville overcrowded pens

Today Eyes on Animals joined Canadian Coalition for Farm Animals to check on the condition and treatment of cattle at the livestock market in Sawyerville, Quebec. We were pleased to not observe any bovine in very poor condition, all appeared fit and mobile. Nevertheless, the handling of the animals was at times unnecessarily aggressive, with most employees seen hitting … [Read more...] about Inspection of Sawyerville livestock market, Quebec (CA)

Tamale livestock market, Ghana

October 5, 2017

This afternoon we inspected a large cattle and sheep market in Ghana together with our colleagues from the Ghanaian welfare organization WACPAW.  We observed serious welfare problems ; there were many animals too weak or injured to stand with no mercy shown to them, beating during loading, the ramp is not high enough to be level with the larger trucks so most cattle … [Read more...] about Tamale livestock market, Ghana

15 Jul
