It was a nightmare, our first visits to this pig abattoir in Kumasi (Ghana). All of the gates of their old lairage were broken or rusted-shut and so workers were picking up pigs and throwing them overboard! Upon their abrupt landing, some pigs broke their legs and noses, and all of them were in sheer terror. We insisted that the manager do something about this and during our last visit made a design plan for a new lairage. Finally today the lairage is being re-done, under the supervision of WACPAW who is now on site. Eyes on Animals and WACPAW work together at trying to reduce some of the horrendous suffering that goes on inside abattoirs in Ghana. There is just so much to do, but we have to start somewhere and not get discouraged. EonA will be returning to Ghana soon and continues to help finance WACPAW to be on the ground regularly.
