This afternoon we had our meeting with two authorities at the Turkish Ministry of Agriculture, responsible for overseeing animal slaughter. They were shocked by some of the footage we showed them, of animals being cruelly restrained, chained and cut all while still conscious and struggling for their life. We showed them how a stunner works and showed them footage of the brave slaughterhouses in Turkey that are the first to be trying out stunning and are in favour of it. We explained the vicious cycle of stunning remaining a taboo and some authorities or Halal certifiers trying to forbid it.
We made it clear that Turkish slaughterhouses need their support in modernizing their equipment so that suffering of animals is reduced and worker safety improved. They will meet with the Religious Authorities of Dyanet next week to discuss it and we may be asked to give a talk.
