First visit of Edemen slaughterhouse in Bursa, Turkey

April 18, 2015

20150418_Edemen_Bursa (9)Today the EonA/AWF team and Dr. Ellen Eser from BSI Schwarzenbek visit Edemen slaughterhouse in Bursa. The owner bought this slaughterhouse seven months ago. We spotted similar problems as in most other Turkish slaughterhouses (trip-floor restraint box, mounting and falling down and live-hoisting). The owner and all the people working at the slaughterhouse were very friendly, open –minded and welcoming and the man responsible for driving the animals from the lairage towards the slaughter area was calm and skilled in animal behaviour. They seem really interested in modernizing and learning about how to improve animal welfare and meat quality. We are working now on building a cooperative and positive working relationship with them, so that practical improvement can soon be put into place. To be followed!

Dear friends,

I first discovered the bad side of factory-farming and industrial slaughter when I was a young girl of twelve.
When I visited a livestock market I saw a pile of sick animals left for dead behind the building. At a huge industrial poultry slaughterhouse, I saw dozens of live chickens walking around the bloody floor…

#hittestress #varkens
