Today, Eyes on Animals conducted an unannounced visit to a large slaughterhouse in Germany specializing in piglets. This facility often processes piglets with minor abnormalities, such as navel hernias, swollen joints, or bitten tails. These conditions can impair growth, potentially worsen, or require medical treatment, making early slaughter the most cost-effective solution. In many southern European countries, suckling pig is considered a delicacy. Dutch piglets are also sent to the Beck slaughterhouse.
Our primary goal during this visit was to discuss ways to improve the handling and stunning of piglets, aiming to minimize stress and reduce the likelihood of errors. Unfortunately, due to the facility’s busy schedule, no one was available to meet with us, and we were advised to schedule an appointment via email.
While previous attempts to arrange a meeting with Beck have gone unanswered, we hope this personal visit will foster collaboration and pave the way for meaningful dialogue.
