Visiting assembly centers to advise on the handling of sick and injured pigs

December 15, 2020

Today Eyes on Animals visited several assembly centers to advise them on the humane killing of sick and injured pigs that are prohibited from further transport. From earlier visits we concluded that emergency killing is not always performed correctly. For example electric tongs or captive bolt pistols are not positioned correctly on the head or the wrong cartridges are used.

Because of these problems, Eyes on Animals, together with Professor Bert Lambooij,  developed a document on how to humanely kill pigs and check if they are still conscious. This will help to reduce suffering of animals that are already in a lot of pain.

This document is also useful for pig farmers that have  legal permits to use captive-bolt guns with cartridges on their animals and for inspection authorities.

The document can be read here (available in Dutch only) >>
