With the help of Eyes on Animals training and stunning material and a donation from Varkens in Nood, our colleagues at WACPAW (West Africa Center for the Protection of Animal Welfare) gave a 2-day training course in how to stun pigs to the slaughtermen of Dako Drom slaughterhouse in Kumasi. Eyes on Animals and WACPAW work together in Ghana to try and put an end to the slaughter of animals while they are fully conscious. We teach the slaughterers working in abattoirs how to render animals at least unconscious first before cutting their throats and tying them up, by using captive bolt pistols to stun them. We then lease out our captive bolt pistols (stunners) to them for free. Slaughterhouses in Ghana, like most slaughterhouses in 3rd and 2nd world countries, do not have stunning equipment and most animals continue to be slaughtered while fully conscious in these places. There is still a lot of suffering but this is one step in a better direction.
