On the agenda again was the formulation and development of advice to promote animal-friendly, and economically viable calf farming in Flanders. No easy task, given the representation of both livestock farmers/fatteners, the calf trade, veterinarians, research and of course animal rights (the latter represented by both GAIA as well as Eyes on Animals).
That animal welfare and economics clash is well known to all, so it is a search for a compromise that is acceptable and workable for all parties, never losing sight of the animal’s welfare. The findings are described in a final report and handed over to Flemish politics as a recommendation. We now speak of “politics.” This is because at the time Eyes on Animals writes this post (09-06-2024), virtually every voting citizen in Europe will have the opportunity to make his/her voice heard by going to the ballot box. One thing is certain, the ballot box results will change the political landscape, and we hope that the new political decision-makers will also take responsibility for animal welfare. We will continue to work for this, not regionally but globally, with respect for humans and animals! We will keep you informed!
