Poultry slaughterhouse Remkes reduces stress during stunning and transport

March 26, 2018

As a result of our inspection, poultry slaughterhouse Remkes in Epe has extended the gas tunnel so that the exposure to CO2 is less abrupt and causes a little less panic. However, we continue to encourage industry and science to find alternatives to CO2 as this gas is aversive. Earlier this year, this slaughterhouse also fixed the conveyer belt on our advice – so that the crates move more smoothly and not continuously bump into eachother. During our follow up inspection we noticed that this adjustment made a big difference as the birds were much calmer than during our previous visit. We want to thank Remkes for their willingness to improve animal welfare in their slaughterhouse.

Four cows escaped the slaughterhouse when a transport truck crashed. After months of freedom, the police coldly shot the animals instead of letting them go to a sanctuary.
