Meeting with pioneer farmer and founder of Calf at Foot Dairy in the UK

October 22, 2023

While in Birmingham to give a talk at the Humane Slaughter conference, EonA took the opportunity to meet with Fiona Provan at her farm nearby. Fiona is a real pioneer farmer and 12 years ago started and trademarketed her “Calf at Foot Dairy” methods. These are methods she believes in and has set up for other farmers to join with the same principles.

Calf at Foot Dairy principle is that cows should keep their calves until their natural weaning age- putting welfare before profit, because health, happiness and the ethical treatment of animals should always come first. She says that despite many claims to the contrary this is entirely possible! Fiona is now approaching retirement age and may wind down as a farmer but continue with spreading her knowledge and practical experiences. Her methods have inspired many dairy farmers to also consider keeping the calves with their mom and raising the welfare standing. We would like to thank Fiona for her time in inviting us to her farm and meet her cows and calves. Pioneer farmers like her are what help revolutionize dairy so that the well being and fate of calves are cows are better taken into account. For nore info please check our Calf at Foot Dairy website.

Dear friends,

It’s not every day that an animal-welfare organization takes on the challenge of redesigning a large pig slaughterhouse and their animal handling techniques, but that’s exactly what we did in 2020.
