Meeting with MIGROS Turkey about slaughter conditions

October 31, 2016

Meeting with Migros in TurkeyToday we held a promising first meeting with the Migros Quality Assurance Research and Development Manager and Meat Marketing Manager as well as colleagues from Quality Department at the main office of Migros Turkey in Istanbul. They agree conditions for animals during slaughter need to improve and will develop a check- list and criteria for their suppliers to fulfill. They inquired about the possibility of Dr. Ellen Eser and others in our team to give a training course to their suppliers so that they have the knowledge about why and how to improve. We have given them our footage showing bad and better examples, the OIE training video on humane-slaughter and our Slaughter Modernization brochure. We will remain in close contact. They definitely seemed serious, let’s see if this shows in practice. One of our goals would be that Migros develop a line of meat products coming from animals that are rendered unconscious prior to being cut, so that their customers have a choice.

When I visited a livestock market I saw a pile of sick animals left for dead behind the building. At a huge industrial poultry slaughterhouse, I saw dozens of live chickens walking around the bloody floor…

“We want to see calves flying out of this country,” the president of the Irish Farmers’ Association, Tim Cullinan. I want to see calves looked after on the farm they were born on, until they are weaned. So disappointing to see this nonsense again...
