Installation of electric stunner at Halal sheep abattoir in Istanbul, Turkije

November 4, 2024

After the horrible disappointment of not being able to help the 47 Romanian cattle stuck at the EU/Turkey border (where they were left to wait for 2 weeks and then slaughtered while fully conscious at a slaughterhouse in Edirne that did not allow us in to at least stun the animals first), we have some better news.

Today Asalet and Jack from Eyes on Animals set up an electric stunner at a sheep slaughterhouse in Istanbul and taught the manager and slaughterman how it works. This is a small sheep slaughterhouse that we had also taught the use of captive bolt pistols to a few years ago, and that is equipped with a captive bolt stunner from us. This slaughterhouse promotes pre-stunning and offers this choice to their customers who come to purchase an animal to be slaughtered for them. We see this as a good way to educate consumers in Istanbul about captive bolt and electric stunning and to spread the word about how pre-stunning renders slaughter at least less painful and respects the teachings of the hadiths, which advocates to always show compassion.
