Eyes on Animals speaks at Dutch Parliament hearing about stunned slaughter

September 25, 2019

Eyes on Animals inspector Asalet has more than 7 years of experience and extensive knowledge in the field of (un)stunned slaughter in Turkish ritual slaughterhouses. He has seen the tremendous suffering that the animals are subjected to in order to make them ‘manageable’ before they are slaughtered.

He also has thorough knowledge of the Koran, religious writings and has read many scientific reports. Asalet is Muslim and in 100% support of stunning the animals before slaughter.

Together with the Turkish EonA team, he was able to get permission from Turkey to import stun guns and cartridges and for increase in the number of Turkish slaughterhouses switching to pre-slaughter stunning.

They have also achieved that, for the first time, a manufacturer of slaughter equipment has developed a fixation box in which the cattle can stand upright. This way there is no need to let them drop first and then hoisting them up alive, on a chain by one leg.

Because of his expertise, Asalet was asked to participate in a hearing of the Committee on Agriculture of the Lower House of Parliament regarding a new bill making stunned slaughter mandatory.

Dear friends and donors,

Autumn is now upon us and the rain pours outside. It is hard to imagine that we conducted “heat-stress” inspections at various major slaughterhouses in the Netherlands not so long ago! But we did, because just a few weeks ago it was still very hot and humid outside.

📢 Two shipments of young bulls that left Ireland recently breached legislation as winds were above force 6. The Dept analysed weather reports beforehand so was well aware of sea conditions. We submitted a joint letter of complaint - read about it here 👇
