Today, Eyes on Animals, together with MHS Consultancy, gave an animal welfare training to the staff of the FamilyBeef cattle slaughterhouse. Using photos and videos, we guided them through the sensory world of the cow:

Hesitating or refusing to walk is rarely due to âstubbornnessâ. Itâs often a reaction to a sudden change in lighting, a strange contrast on the floor, a person in sight, or simply⊠being rushed. Cows need time to properly see their surroundings and assess whether it is safe to move forward. Pushing them too hard can be counterproductive.
We also addressed a range of technical aspects: how can you tell if an animal is truly unconscious after stunning? How do you move a cow calmly and with minimal stress into the raceway?
By reviewing CCTV footage together â from FamilyBeef and other slaughterhouses â we were able to discuss each part of the process, from unloading to stunning, step by step.
The FamilyBeef team was highly motivated and engaged. Valuable ideas emerged on how to improve the layout of the holding area and raceways. Input we can take back to the management for further follow-up.
