Day 2 of Inspection of EU cattle trucks at the Turkish border

June 27, 2017

Today, a team from EonA and TSB | AWF has again carried out an inspection at the border. We visited the feeder bulls at both of the locations where they have been for 3 weeks. The staff of the stables do their best, but during our visit we saw 2 dead bulls. Our organizations are working hard to get the bulls out of here. We will keep you informed. We also inspected 6 cattle trucks. Definitely half of them were not okay: due to, amongst others, dirty drinking troughs, no water, dirty floors, dangerous partitions. We will of course report this to the carriers/clients and governments of the countries where these transports originate from.

Today the temperature here was between 35 and 40 degrees. That’s no temperature for transporting live animals. The good news is that in the meantime all the transports have now gone to their final destination. In this heat, the worst thing for the animals is being stationary. Then it’s not possible to keep the cattle trucks cool enough.

Meanwhile, a second team has also arrived to work on the Bulgarian side of the border. In this way we can accurately determine how long transports have to wait and how long it takes for them to get from Bulgaria to Turkey. To be continued.

Dear friends,

Despite the extreme heat and high humidity these last days still tens of thousands of pigs were transported to Dutch slaughterhouses. We visited the two largest: VION in Boxtel and VION in Apeldoorn.
