Today we gave an animal-welfare workshop to the auditors of Migros supermarket chain in Turkey, responsible for the meat selection at their stores and buying large quantities of meat directly from the slaughterhouses in Turkey. We prepared a check-list for them to, as of now, audit the slaughterhouses that supply Migros. Those that do poorly will be asked to make concrete improvements. Today we explained how our check-list works and went through all the aspects of how animal-suffering can be at least decreased from unloading to restraint and slaughter. We also discussed thoroughly the advantages of pre-stunning the animals and the urgent need to get rid of live hoisting. The participants were very active and interactive. We will remain in regular contact with Migros with the hope that they be the first in Turkey to finally carry a meat selection based on more humane standards than the current alarming slaughter conditions there.
