With the help of Eyes on Animals training and stunning material and a donation from Varkens in Nood, our colleagues at WACPAW (West Africa Center for the Protection of Animal Welfare) gave a 2-day training course in how to stun pigs to the slaughtermen of Kojo Krom slaughterhouse in Kumasi. Eyes on Animals and WACPAW work together to try and put an end to the slaughter of conscious animals in Ghana, teaching the slaughterers working in abattoirs how to stun animals and leasing out captive bolt pistols (stunners) to them, so that animals are at least rendered insensitive to pain when their throats are cut to be bleed out. Slaughterhouses in Ghana, like most slaughterhouses in 3rd and 2nd world countries, do not have stunning equipment and most animals continue to be slaughtered while fully conscious.
